I am looking for a place to store contacts on the Internet, so I can get to them from anywhere.  I need basic things like name, phone number and address.

No problem and a great idea.  I like http://www.google.com/contacts , it does have all of the basic contact information and includes a notes section in addition to being able to accommodate multiple phone numbers, email addresses, and physical addresses.
 
It is web based, so you can access your list of names, phones numbers, addresses and note from any computer anywhere, that has Internet access, by using your gmail.com username and password.  This means that even if you don’t want a gmail account (google’s free web based email account),  and even if you don’t intend to ever use google’s free email, you need to register for one of these free accounts, and its that login and password that allows for you to access the contact page.  

This contacts area of google’s website isn’t new, but its new that there is a direct link to it at http://www.google.com/contacts , while before it was accessible only in the email interface of gmail.com, and in addition to the fact that it can still be accessed and used within the gmail.com email program, it can be used directly at the http://www.google.com/contacts URL.

To register for a username and password, simply visit www.google.com and click on gmail across the top of the page, or sign in, to find a link to register for a free account.  It’s certainly no waste of time, to register for a google username and password as it can be used for many of google’s other free services, like google calendar and many others.  Google calendar can be found at calendar.google.com .
